Clean bowled

India is on a commanding position against Sri Lanka in the cricket test here at Ahmedabad. Some of my friends went to watch the match yesterday and were thrilled to see India’s performance, while us here at campus, watched bits and pieces of the match from the TV, with sporadic outbursts of human emotions of joie de vivre whenever the ball crossed the boundary, emulating typical Indian populace. No other game is as popular and favorite as cricket in India.

Air Sahara is going to sponsor the Indian cricket team for the next four years further to a winning bid of Rs 314 crores. The deal is confined only to the display of their logo on the players’ chest and their leading arm. More money is going to come to BCCI (Bharat Cricket Control Board) from the display of logos on the non-leading arm, kit etc. of the players from prospective sponsors for which the tender will be opened on 23rd December. The TV rights of the matches are expected to fetch a sum of more than Rs. 400 crores. These figures added with other revenue streams are predicted to give an incredible profit of more than Rs. 700 crores to BCCI in the coming year.

On the other side, India has the highest cricket viewer ship in the world and hence is a paradise for TV advertisements. Ever thought about the number of advertisements being aired on a single channel for a single match and the associated amount flowing behind it? Though the math is simple, the figure is much more than what we can probably imagine of. Then there is an awfully big bookmaking market where bet amounts are in crores. Cricket is not just a game in India; it’s a business too. In such a situation it is worthwhile to ask ourselves a question. Are we giving more importance than is required to a silly game?

we do give unnecessary hype to cricket. and, on the flip side, the matches are all probably fixed months ago, and we the public watch the drama like the naive populi that we are!

I guess it is the cricket crazy public that dictates whether Cricket should be given importance or not. If there is viewership there is nothing that anyone can do but exploit the situation commercially. I think it will take a long time for other sports to establish itself in the mind of the general populace.

Cricket is more than a game in India now. It is a tradition...passed down from father to son.

well i am not really sure of what is silly and what is not...i had a fren who told me that he wants to die playing football... there was one who told me that he wud spent his last 5 yrs watchin liverpool play... for them sport is not silly.

if its cricket in India it is EPL in england baseball in US.. the point is sport of any form has the sole purpose of releiving stress.. so the kind of attention that cricket gets i guess is okay...

but what is interesting is that in all these countries its the men's football or men's cricket that is under limelight. A female cricketer in India makes jus 2k per game her male counter part makes 2 lakhs for just being in the team...

hmm.. sometimes, looking at the way in which ppl get out, even i wonder!

> silverine
thts true.. the ppl (including me) are mad abt cricket.

ufff! i re-thought abt the usage of the word 'silly' after i posted it. :-) well well.. wanted to stress the word 'game'.

lets hope that the recent wins of the cricket female team would bring them also to the limelight.

Cricket has been handed down to me by my father, uncles b grandpa.....quite like silverine mentioned.....and i watch the game wenever i can....
now abt the importance given to it well people in all countries place importance to their sports ranging from soccer to baseball/basketball.
do we forget other sports in india due to cricket, yes we have our the past few years. but then today i think the focus is shifting. ofcourse, cricket rules but atleast a little media coverage goes to the other games.....
well, bye for now....

My maths sux .. so can't comment tht .. lol
But yeah - wht to do - Cricket isn't just a sport in India .. so much goes in the backgroud .. politics, money making corruption etc etc .. n add to tht - this overpopulated cricket crazy nation.
Unless n until we take sports seriously in school levels n motivate young kids to play other games n reward them too .. things gonna be the same ..

the matches might have been fixed in past, but looking at the games during my vacation, I would believe that they were playing improvised games. It just so happened that in India Cricket is sort of "the" game. Other games are aslo being popular as well now a days. Like here in US, they have Super Bowl game, which is being played every year on the Thanks Giving day, which is one of the major holidays here. The companies pay Millions of $$ to get 30 sec time slots, and at the half time of the game, the prices just sore up to sky. And it is the only game which has the highest viewership in US. The companies which sponsor the game, usually ends up seeing their profits sky high in the year-end balancesheets! it is business for the companies, but for people, it's entertainment. I don't see anything wrong if companies pay high amopunts for cricket, business grows, so why not!

sports are definitely a part of our lives.. its not just confined to india. in england, ppl fight with each other and kill themselves over football. in india all those sentiments come out, over hyped by media.. after all arent cricket and football just sports! :-)

> dasappan
dey 700 is not just 314 + 400. there were extra income also which i didnt quantified minus the expenses. btw these figures were given by Times of India on 20th December and they estimated a profit of 700 to 1000 crores this term. :p

> aria
thts a good suggestion and evoke another train of thoughts. regarding the importance and education given to sports in schools. worth discussable topic.. :-)

> venus
yup, things mite've changed to those issues.. well actually no one is blamed here, the companies or the populace. they are the aftermath of the over importance given to sports.. :-)

uv raised a good question here jithu!
i guess its the mentality of our people that is at fault...either it is sachin sachin sachin.or sania sania sania....giving too much hype

No i dont think we're giving undue importance to a game...what americans feel towards baseball, or what the english feel towards rugby, we indians feel towards cricket! N i think it feels real good!

yeah that word was inappropriate i agree.. :-) but the question remains the same. hey even i wonder why ppl are doing such crazy stuff to get into guinnes records. but really not sure whether its interest or some other feelings that drive them.
